Wellpower Program Overview

Wellpower is our wellness program for part-time and full-time, benefit-eligible staff and faculty at SMU! The website found at wellpower.smu.edu (omit the "www.") is accessible from any internet-connected computer running Windows 98 or higher.

Participants are challenged to accumulate Wellpower Credits beginning August 25, 2008 through July 17, 2009. The program has three levels of achievement, Bronze, Silver & Gold and three areas of focus-Body, Mind and Spirit.

Levels of Achievement

Bronze Level: Requires 30 total credits from any category, Body, Mind and/or Spirit.

Silver Level: Requires: 45 total credits regardless of category.

Gold Level-requires 60 total credits with a minimum of 10 credits each in the categories of Body, Mind & Spirit. Remaining credits can come from any category.

Caution! You can earn many credits and not earn Gold.  Example: If you earn 70 credits, but 60 are Body credits, 6 are Mind credits and 4 are Spirit credits, you would still be considered at the Silver level.

Categories

Body

Activities and challenges that support your overall physical fitness. Activities such as exercise classes, exercise activity challenges, nutrition consulting, and healthy eating challenges are just a few of the activities found in this category.

Mind

Challenges and activities that support your mental and intellectual growth. Opportunities such as Professional Development Workshops, Informal Courses, ITS computer classes, lectures, exhibits, and forums are examples of activities found in this category.
Spirit

Includes activities and challenges that support your overall well-being, spiritual health and sense of community involvement. Activities found in this category may include workshops on a variety of topics, community and SMU volunteer opportunities, and support for student activities.

Earning Credits

There are three different ways to earn credits:
  1. Attending activities which are usually on the main campus.
  2. Completing tasks on your own.
  3. Participating in challenges.

Wellpower lists many activities and events on the Activity Schedule. Use the schedule to locate activities you want to attend, how many credits an activity is worth, what category of credit you'll earn and who is responsible for entering the credit.

Check the Body, Mind and Spirit Activities pages for information about ways you can earn credits within each category.

Challenges do not require attendance at events, but are completed on your own and require that you log your Challenge points on the Wellpower website. Challenges encourage you to establish a healthy habit over the course of a month or 6 weeks.

Challenges

A challenge is a designated period of time during which we are focusing our attention on building a particular healthy habit. The activities required are completed on your own and do not require attendance at a class or event.

Example: The physical challenge runs 6 weeks long and asks you to track your exercise outside of SMU fitness classes. You will log 1 point for every 10 minutes of activity at the moderate or strenuous level. You can hike, walk, jog, lift weights, play basketball, do yoga etc...the choice is yours!
