Personal problems can affect our lives, both at home and at work. SMU's Employee Assistance Program is a confidential program for all faculty and staff. The EAP is available to help employees and their families manage issues related to health, marriage, family, work, stress, substance abuse, depression, and other personal issues. Licensed counselors, psychologists and psychiatrists provide confidential and professional guidance.
Magellan provides a 24-hour hot line, initial evaluation and assessment, short-term counseling, family consultations, benefit coordination, outside referrals, on-line self help, and follow-up services. All calls are free regardless of frequency.
The first three visits are charged to the University and if further counseling is needed, outside counseling will be recommended by Magellan. If additional counseling is recommended be sure to talk to your Magellan Counselor about getting a referral to a BCBS of Texas or Aetna (depending on your medical plan) in-network counselor.
If you are enrolled in BCBSTX PPO go to the BCBSTX website, click on Providers, Provider Finder, Search by Health Plan (select BlueChoice), Select Provider Type, Select Behavioral Health Practitioner. You can then search for a provider by specialty (e.g., Family Practice, Chemical & Dependency Counselors, Psychiatry, etc.)
If you are enrolled in the Aetna HMO, go to the Aetna website and search the DocFind Provider Directory.
When you visit the Magellan website you will be asked to register and sign-in. Enter the EAP# (877-704-5696) and then follow the prompts. You will have access to a provider directory as well as information on a variety of topics and interactive tools that can help you address stressful life issues.
