The Engineering RA is expected to create and encourage activities and programs that enhance the experience for all students living in the Engineering community. The Engineering RA has the standard responsibilities listed in the Resident Assistant (RA) job descriptions; but has different programming requirements. Aside from the monthly floor program, the Engineering RA will plan and implement at least one community program a month. The Engineering RA will use the Cornerstones, but the programs should have an engineering focus. It is also expected that the Engineering RA will work with his/her supervisor to bring faculty into the community. Preference will be given to returning staff members, and applicants should be an Engineering or Computer Science major.
The Fine Arts RA is expected to create and encourage fine arts activities and programs that enhance the experience for all students living in the Fine Arts Community (FAC). The Fine Arts RA has the standard responsibilities listed in the Resident Assistant (RA) job description; but has different and additional programming requirements. The Fine Arts RA works with the Fine Arts Residential Community Director to define, implement and promote a residentially based program that fosters an appreciation of the arts. Each semester, the Fine Arts RA is responsible for coordinating two Out to Lunch programs with fine arts related faculty members, and one career development program focused on helping fine arts majors prepare for life after SMU. The Fine Arts RA plans the annual FAC Live Series each semester which includes an Art Show, Film Show, and Talent Show. The Fine Arts RA also advises the Fine Arts Coordinator on the Community Council. The Fine Arts RA can be a new or returning staff member.
The Honors RA is expected to create opportunities for Virginia Snider residents to engage in the University Honors Program experience as well as to serve as a part of a staff team that builds positive community. The Honors RA has the standard responsibilities listed in the Resident Assistant (RA) job descriptions; but has differing program requirements. The Honors RA works with the Virginia Snider Residential Community Director and University Honors Program Director to define, implement, and promote a residentially based program that fosters an intellectual inquiry of the mind. The Honors RA will use the Cornerstones, but the programs should have an Honors focus. It is also expected that the Honors RA will work with his/her supervisor to bring faculty into the community. Preference will be given to returning staff members, and applicants should be in the University Honors Program.
The New Century Scholars RA is expected to create and encourage activities and programs that enhance the experience for all New Century Scholars living in the community. The New Century Scholars RA has the standard responsibilities listed in the Resident Assistant (RA) job descriptions; but has different programming requirements. The New Century Scholars RA must have an interest in community service and in working with first-year students. Previous experience in planning service projects is desired. The New Century Scholars RA will focus on the Cornerstones, but the programs should have a service focus. Preference will be given to applicants who possess experience in New Century Scholars.
The Service House RA (SHRA) is a student who is employed part-time by Residence Life and Student Housing (RLSH) in partnership with the Community Engagement and Leadership (CEL) Center. Primary duties of the SHRA include living as an active member of the SMU Service House (SMUSH), organizing programs designed to build community and support the house's community service theme, acting as a resource for residents and serving on a house committee, and maintaining two hours per week in the CEL office. The SHRA reports directly to the SMUSH Residential Community Director. The SHRA also has most of the standard responsibilities listed in the Resident Assistant job description. The SHRA can be a new or returning staff member and must have an interest in community service.
