Parents

Whether your student is entering his or her first year or beginning a second year of graduate school, there are resources available to help in the transition. The links to the left provide a quick means of accessing useful information about housing and the entire university. Our goal is to be a resource for you.

Important Parent Notice

College campuses around the country are seeing cases of flu among their students. SMU has had several cases as well. We are working closely with the Health Center to try to limit the spread of the flu. Here are a few of the things we are doing.

Thermometers have been made available to all residence hall students. If a student is not running at least a fever of 100.8 degrees, the health center advises that they not go to the health center where they will expose themselves to other students who do have the flu. If your student has not received a thermometer, have them see their Residence Community Director.

Extra cleaning - Our cleaning staff are focusing extra attention on bathrooms, door handles, and other touch points.

Hand sanitizer is located in all of our residence halls and other locations around campus.

We have been encouraging students to

  • Wash their hands with soap and water and use hand gel/spray often.
  • Use tissues when you cough or sneeze and drop the tissue in the trash. If you don't have a tissue, cover your mouth and nose with your sleeve. Remember to wash your hands afterwards.
  • Do not share water bottles, food, utensils, towels and other personal items.
  • Do not touch your mouth, nose and eyes.
  • Try to stay away from people who are sick.
  • If a student is diagnosed with the flu, they are encouraged to go home if possible. Those unable to go home will need to isolate in their room
  • Get enough sleep
  • Get a flu shot as soon as they become available

We hope that these efforts will help minimize the spread of the flu. Please encourage your student to take care of themselves and follow the guidelines above.

In Case of Emergency

As an on-going effort, SMU has developed an Emergency Plan. Part of the plan is to inform our community of how to respond to a disaster. Please refer to the Emergency & Disaster Guide for more information.

In addition, the Department of Residence Life & Student Housing will from time to time post important information here regarding critical residence hall situations as the need warrants.
