“I
believe that the ongoing factual narrative of real-world
history makes today’s much-loved TV “reality shows” look
pretty lame by comparison. In the fields that I
specialize in, such as the development of frontier
America, the fur trade, overland trails, gold rushes,
cattle ranching, and warfare on this continent in the
eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, events often took
on the aspects of a riveting narrative that even skilled
fiction writers are hard-pressed to surpass. I celebrate
this, and employ as an integral part of my pedagogy the
extensive experience I have had as an historical
interpreter and “living history” program developer for
U.S. and state park services and the United States Army,
as well as relevant artifacts and material culture, to
enhance and illuminate historical understanding of
topical themes in the classroom.”
