The American Civil War was a watershed historical event that took a nation of
seemingly inexhaustible optimism and possibilities and plunged it into a
conflict of unprecedented fury unmatched in this nation’s history. Few other
historical epochs resonate in the American psyche with the power of the saga of
the tragic and heroic “War Between the States.” This class will explore the
roots of that conflict, march with its armies, and trace the nation’s struggle
to redefine itself in the war’s aftermath.
Readings include;
1) James McPherson, Ordeal by
Fire; 2) Michael Perman, The Coming of the Civil War; 3) Bell Wiley,
The Life of Johnny Reb, and 4) Elisha Hunt Rhodes, All for the Union
