Recommendations for Staying Healthy

Dallas County Health and Human Services are recommending the following to keep our campus community healthy:

  • Get vaccinated.
  • If you are experiencing flu-like symptoms (fever/chills, cough, body aches), it is important to see a medical provider early.  To be effective, antiviral medications should be started within 48 hours after symptoms begin.
  • Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze with either a disposable tissue or your sleeve.
  • Wash hands with soap and water or use hand sanitizer frequently.
  • Persons who may have flu should stay at home to avoid spreading the illness to others.

Dallas county influenza resources and updates are available at : www.dallascounty.org.

The new Texas state law mandates that new students under the age of 30, including transfer students, must present documentation they have been vaccinated against bacterial meningitis within the past 5 years.  Please submit documentation at least 10 days prior to the first day of class. Information about the new law is available at: http://www.legis.state.tx.us/.

Written proof of immunization must be submitted to the SMU Health Center with the Health History Form.  A conscientious exemption form may be obtained by completing a request for the form online at: https://webds.dshs.state.tx.us/immco/affidavit.shtm

The SMU Student Health Center has the bacterial meningitis vaccination available and you may call 214-768-2141 to make an appointment. The cost is $150. A receipt may be obtained for insurance purposes. You may also obtain a meningitis immunization at you doctor’s office, a local pharmacy which provides immunizations or the county health department.

This vaccination is offered during the immunization clinic times on Wednesdays, 9-11 AM and 1:30 - 3:30 PM.  No appointment is necessary. This vaccine may be charged to your student account.
