Mandatory Student Health Insurance
Introduction
SMU is very concerned about the health and well-being of all students and we at the Student Health Center are here to serve and provide for your medical care while attending the University. In order to establish you have appropriate health care coverage, a mandatory health insurance requirement was passed by the President’s Executive Council (PEC) in February 2008. This mandatory health insurance policy requires students to maintain insurance coverage as a condition of their enrollment.
Beginning November 2, 2009, SMU’s mandatory health insurance policy requires students to provide documentation of insurance coverage or to enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). In order to avoid automatic enrollment into SHIP and thereby have a premium charge of $669.00 per semester applied to your student account, you must take steps to waive SHIP coverage. Note: The Health Insurance button in the Student Center component of Access.SMU will appear only after a student has enrolled in the Spring 2010 Term.
For more information on how to WAIVE or ELECT coverage, choose from the following:
*A domestic student is one who is a U.S. Citizen or holds a permanent resident card (green card).
**An international student is one who is in the U.S. on an F-1 Visa.
