Counseling and Psychiatric Services offers SMU students the opportunity to be evaluated for the presence of Learning Disabilities and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Certain limitations may be placed on these services based on availability of staff and characteristics of the students requesting the testing. For example, testing is not available for part-time students or students in their last year of study. Comprehensive assessments are conducted by Counseling and Psychiatric Services staff, and usually require at least 6-8 hours of the student's time. Appointments are required, and the entire process typically takes from four to eight weeks to complete.
If a diagnosis of a disability is made, the student may then contact Services for Students with Disabilities in order to secure any accommodations which might be required. The Coordinator of Services for Students with Disabilities can be reached at 214-768-4557.
Undergraduate students who are in need of academic skills training, including study skills, academic strategies and reading skills enhancement may benefit from calling the Altshuler Learning Enhancement Center at 214-768-3648 or 214-768-6725.
There is a $450.00 fee for Learning Disability or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder testing.
