Counseling and Psychiatric Services is located on the second floor of the Memorial Health Center. Services are available for currently enrolled SMU students and are free with the exception of a $20 No Show fee.
Students new to CAPS or who are returning after an absence of 3 to 6 months or more will need to schedule a Triage appointment. These appointments are brief (30 minutes in length), but allow you to be seen quickly, your needs evaluated and to discuss your treatment options. Community referrals may be provided if that represents the most appropriate and best treatment.
Triage Appointments are Monday through Friday 1:00 - 3:00 PM
Students may self-schedule their triage appointment by accessing the CAPS Client Portal. You will be able to fill out the Client Information Form on line. When you arrive at CAPS, you will be asked to sign the Consent for Counseling and Treatment Form as well as a HIPAA release. Please take time to read all Consent Forms carefully before signing.
If you wish to complete your online paper work at CAPS, please arrive 30 minutes prior to your self-scheduled triage appointment. Thus, if your appointment is at 1:00 PM please arrive no later than 12:30 PM.
For those students who become clients of CAPS, you will either schedule your continuing appointments with your clinician or you may call the center at 214.768.2277 (CAPS). Compliance with keeping your appointments is essential; thus, CAPS has the option to refer your care to clinicians in the community if you repeatedly fail to show up or cancel (without appropriate reasons) appointments.
If you feel that you are in a mental health crisis and need to be seen immediately, please come by the center during office hours (M –F 8:30 – 5:00 or call 214.768.2277 to reach the clinician on call after business hours.
