Counseling and Psychiatric Services is located on the second floor of the Memorial Health Center. Services are available for currently enrolled SMU students and are free with the exception of a $20 No Show fee.
Students new to CAPS or who are returning after an absence of 3 to 6 months or more will need to first have a Triage appointment. These appointments are brief (15 to 20 minutes), but allow to you be seend quickly, your needs evaluated, and to discuss your treatment options. Community referrals will be provided if that represents the most appropriate and best treatment. Students are seen for triage appointments on a first come, first served basis once their paperwork is completed.
Triage Appointments are Monday through Friday 1:00 - 3:00 PM
The Client Information Form will need to be completed and brought with you to your first (triage) appointment. If you do not wish to complete it beforehand, you may do so at CAPS prior to your triage appointment. Please take time to read the Consent for Counseling and Treatment as you will be asked to sign it at CAPS.
If you wish to complete all paperwork at CAPS, you need to arrive 30 minutes prior to when you want to be seen. Thus, if you want to be seen at 1:00 PM, please arrive no later than 12:30. There will still be a few more forms to complete once you arrive.
For those student who become clients of CAPS, you will either schedule your appointments with your clinician or you may call the center at 214-768-2277 (CAPS). Compliance with keeping apointments is essential; thus, CAPS has the option to refer your care to clinicians in the community if you repeatedly fail to show up or cancel I(without appropriate reasons) for appointments.

immediately, please come to the center during office hours (M-F 8:30-5:00) or
call 214-768-2277 to reach the clinician on call.
