•Types 1 & 2 found in genital lesions
•Diagnosed by examination and cultures
•Can be transmitted even without visible lesions
Popular with the media in the 1980’s; hasn’t decreased, just lost the spotlight to HIV.

Not reportable in most states (including Texas), so figures of incidence and prevalence vary.  Some reports indicate up to 20% of young adults in the US are infected with HSV 2.

60%--70% of people infected may never experience symptoms.

Transmitted by direct sexual contact (genital or oral).
Incubation 2-20 days.
