Among US 18-19 year olds,   nearly 3/4 report ever having sex:
     78% African Americans
     74% white
     70% Hispanic
1/4 of all sexually active adolescents contract an STD prior to leaving high school
Many STD’s are asymptomatic

Different from common skin warts but look more or less the same.

Certain subtypes common in young people associated with cancer of the cervix.  Premalignant/ malignant changes can be detected by routine Pap smears.
Virus may be shed even if no warts are visible.

Most treatments relatively painless, available at the clinic.
Abstinence, minimizing the total number of lifetime partners, and condom use decrease transmission.
Popular with the media in the 1980’s; hasn’t decreased, just lost the spotlight to HIV.
Not reportable in most states (including Texas), so figures of incidence and prevalence vary.  Some reports indicate up to 20% of young adults in the US are infected with HSV 2.
60%--70% of people infected may never experience symptoms.
Transmitted by direct sexual contact (genital or oral).
Incubation 2-20 days.

Vesicles/blisters form, rupture, form painful ulcers.
Men--glans, prepuce, penile shaft.
Women--vulva, cervix.
First outbreak resolves in 10-14 days.
Recurrences often less severe, shorter duration, especially when
medication started promptly.
