Interfraternity Council (IFC)

The Interfraternity Council, or IFC, is the governing body of the nine fraternity chapters at SMU affiliated with the North-American Interfraternity Conference and the Fraternity Leadership Association (FLA).

IFC is a student-run organization that exists:

  • To promote the interests of the University, which include scholarship, leadership and citizenship.
  • To promote the interests and unity of the Greek organizations represented on campus.
  • To promote the interests of college fraternities in general, which includes the consideration that they are viable and valuable collegiate experiences.
  • To facilitate communication and cooperation between member fraternities and the University administration and faculty.

The Interfraternity Council organizes activities in which its member fraternities participate, such as community service, recruitment events, educational programs, and leadership development.

Some of the highlights of IFC involvement include Fraternity Formal Recruitment, New Member Seminars, Trick or Treat on Greek Street & The Annual Easter Egg Hunt benefiting Trinity River Mission, attending the Association of Fraternal Leadership & Values Conference, opportunities to attend national leadership development conferences like the Undergraduate Interfraternity Institute (UIFI) and Leadershape, and hosting the Special Olympics Texas Volleyball Tournament for Dallas.

Campaign to Frat Responsibly

In the fall of 2009, the nine member chapter and council executive board decided that it was time to improve their image and remind their brothers and the campus what it means to be am IFC fraternity man at Southern Methodist University.  While no chapter or its members are perfect, this web campaign - along with various printed media - hopefully serves as a reminder of our community's shared values and the holistic value of the fraternity experience.  Historically, members and non-members alike have described the actions of individual brothers in the fraternity community as "fratting"; a shortened form of the intransitive verb 'fraternize. This campaign serves to reclaim the very essence of the word and remind our community to always fraternize in a responsible manner.
