Children anticipate renovated
SMU playground
Every day children attending the SMU Preschool and Child Care Center
eagerly view construction progress on their playground, which is
undergoing renovation this summer, says director Joanne Osterland.
Adjacent to the center in Hawk Hall on the southwest side of campus,
the new playground will feature a tricycle path, a sandbox, and
a modern play structure. The playground also will offer unique attractions,
including a teddy bear garden and a splash lawn.
The SMU Preschool Playground will be dedicated at 8:30 a.m. August
22 on site, adjacent to the Child Care Center. For more information,
contact Martha Coniglio, 8-4523 or mconigli@smu.edu.
Video to distribute emergency plan
information
A special video summarizing practical steps for students, parents,
faculty/staff, and others in case of a campus emergency will be
circulated Universitywide, beginning in mid-July. In addition, the
video will:
- increase awareness about SMU's expanded emergency preparedness
plan,
- reassure the community that SMU is a safe place, and
- provide basic information about the plan, driving viewers to
the Web site
for more details.
To be distributed via e-mail, the Web, and University television,
the video also includes interviews with President R. Gerald Turner
and faculty, staff, and students.
Staff Association invites community
feedback
As part of the past year's reorganization, the SMU Staff Association
(SMUSA) has introduced a new way to address community ideas and
concerns.
Formerly the Staff Council, the SMUSA Forum has created a confidential
process for members of the SMU community to submit suggestions,
concerns, and opinions about the life of the University. Outlined
in a recent letter from Forum Chair John Gibson, the process includes
a formal submission form that will be reviewed and addressed by
the SMUSA Forum, which will incorporate the staff member in each
step of the process.
All SMU staff are considered members of the Staff Association,
and faculty are invited to participate in any of the group's programs.
To obtain additional forms, contact Gibson at 8-3842, jgibson@smu.edu.
