A
productive day!
Updated:
July 21, 2000
Today was
productive as our main fossil quarry, pit 5, was excavated by our hired
crew. The pit has been expanded to almost twice its original size, and
we are expecting to start working extensively in it by tomorrow afternoon.

Above:
Fossil fish skeleton.
Below: Grass fragments.

Excavation
at other sites has produced several fish specimens, as well as monocot
leaf fragments (such as grasses) and several other (dicot) leaves.
Camp life
continues to be comfortable. Our meals include a meat dish (either corned
beef, fresh beef, or chicken), rice, potato, or pasta, and fresh oranges.
To drink we have strong tea, soft drinks, and beer. Our laundry is expertly
cleaned by a woman from the local village who has also given us fresh
bread. Dinner is eaten in front of a roaring campfire, and the after-dinner
entertainment consists of shining our flashlights in the trees in search
of bush babies.
We are all
healthy, happy, and excited to find more fossils! Jason would like to
send his love and happy birthday wishes to his parents Helen (birthday
today) and Jim (birthday on Tuesday).
Best wishes,
Jason
