Conversation Buddy Program

SMU’s Conversation Buddy Program is an opportunity for ESL students of SMU to practice their listening and speaking skills with a native speaker of English in an informal, one-on-one setting outside of the classroom.  If possible, you will be matched with a student who is interested in your language and culture; in this way, you both benefit from a two-way language exchange.

We ask that you volunteer a minimum of one hour per week to meet with your Conversation Buddy.  In case your Buddy will also be learning or interested in your native language, s/he may wish to spend an additional hour with you practicing in your language.  You may meet wherever and whenever you like, and there are no requirements for the type of activity.  We recommend, however, that you use this time to practice your speaking skills, rather than reading, writing, or grammar.

The Conversation Buddy Program is an option available for students enrolled in a Choices II Wellness class to partially fulfill the out-of-class co-requirements.  Students should talk to their CHOICES II instructor for details.

If you would like to have a Conversation Buddy, please look out for the e-mail announcement which is sent to all SMU students near the beginning of each fall, spring and summer term.  Once you receive the announcement, you may complete and submit the online Application Form.  Please send an e-mail message to Ms. Jennifer R. Smith at smithjr@smu.edu if you have any questions about the program.

We cannot promise to find a Conversation Buddy for everyone who requests one, but we will certainly do our best.  Have fun!
