There is a link between the environment
and a viable society
In the emerging green economy, there is a growing understanding that
sustainable living and development are key components for a healthy,
economically viable society. A degree in environmental studies from SMU
provides the tools for finding effective, cultural solutions to global
environmental problems in government chambers, corporate boardrooms and
classrooms with the knowledge that caring for the environment makes good
business sense and helps support a sense of community.
SMU’s Environmental Studies Program is an interdisciplinary curriculum
for students who are interested in studying the environment at a
societal and policy-making level but do not intend to become
scientists. Complex environmental issues are considered from multiple
perspectives such as anthropology, business, economics, engineering,
science and sociology. A major in Environmental Studies is easily
complimented by a double major or minor in many other fields including:

- Environmental Earth Science
- Environmental Science
- Journalism
- Sociology
- Markets and Culture
The BA in Environmental Studies requires 36 term hours,
including 21 hours of core courses and 15 hours of electives.
Courses from three SMU schools – Dedman College of Humanities and
Sciences, Cox School of Business and Bobby B. Lyle School of
Engineering are incorporated into the major, providing a thorough
field of study and rich sources for the required senior project.
