Mac Tutorial



 
1. Log-in

The power switch is located in the back of monitor (your left).

Log in with account:
User: des_test
Password: test2007

 



 
2. Internet Browser

Mac uses Safari as the default Internet browser. You can launch Safari from the dock on the bottom of the desktop.

Click on the
Safari icon to open.


 

To properly exit Safari, click on "Safari" on the menu on top of screen and choose "Quit Safari".

Clicking on will simply close the window but the program is kept running in the background.

 

 


Note: Apple Safari is also available for MS Windows now; can be downloaded at

 http://www.apple.com/safari/download/

 



 
3. PIA Testing Sites

The shortcut link to PIA has already been created on the desktop for your convenience. Double-click on the PIA icon and Safari will launch page pointing to http://www.smu.edu/its/systems/dba/pia.htm.



 
4. Set Bookmarks

To set bookmarks, go to the webpage you want to bookmark and select "Bookmarks" -> "Add Bookmark...". Then select which folder you would like to place the book mark in. You don't always need to choose a folder and can leave the book at the root.

To access a bookmark, select "Bookmarks" -> "Bookmarks Bar". Or you can also access on the Bookmarks Bar on the browser:

 


To add a bookmark directly under the Bookmarks drop-down menu, select "Bookmarks", hover your mouse pointer over "Add Bookmark...", hold down Shift and you will see the option change to "Add Bookmark to Menu", select that and the bookmark will show in the menu without having to go to "Bookmarks Bar".

     

 


To add a bookmark to the desktop select "Bookmarks" -> "Show All Bookmarks" and a window will come up with all of your bookmarks. You may drag these bookmarks to the desktop to create a shortcut.



 
5. Screenshot

To take a snapshot of the screen, press:
+ Shift + 3

If you want to be able to select a region to screenshot, press:
+ Shift + 4   and use your mouse to select an area

The screenshot will be automatically saved to the desktop in PNG format.



 
6. Microsoft Office

Microsoft Office:Mac 2004 is installed on this Mac. To run:

Click on the Finder icon on the dock to open up Mac's version of Explorer.

Click on Applications and find Microsoft Office 2004. Double-click and you will see the Office applications.


Note: You can also drag the Office icons to the desktop or the dock for quicker access in the future.
 

 



 
7. Other Info

USB
The location of USB ports are on the back of monitor (your right) and the vertical top of keyboard (in the middle).

DVD/CD
Disc drive is located on right side of monitor.

Hotkeys
You can control the volume and eject DVD/CD using the keys above the keypad.

Adjust Brightness
You may adjust the level of monitor's brightness using F14 and F15 keys.

Network
Macs are currently not compatible with the SMU network so they're off the domain, and therefore you cannot log in with your personal SMU account or access network drives.
