Installing the OCS software
For office Windows machines, the Office Communicator client will be distributed automatically via LANDesk.
For Macintosh computers, the Mac Messenger software can be downloaded via http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.mspx . At the bottom of the page, you will see “Messenger for Mac” under the Products list in the “Browse for Downloads” section. You will want to choose “Microsoft Messenger for Mac 7.0.2”. Once installed, you will also need to install a certificate file (attached to this email) by following the instructions at the bottom of this document.
To sign in, enter your email address using the @smu.edu format.
If you need a client on a mobile device or Linux machine, simply go to im.smu.edu to run a temporary client for messaging.
Available Components
At this time, IM, presence is available for OCS participants.
Presence

Presence indicators will now appear in communicator as well as in Outlook. A round icon appears next to each name or email address. This icon will indicate their presence using different colors:
· Green=Available
· Red=In A Meeting
· Yellow= Away/Inactive
· Red with Line in the middle—Do Not Disturb
Presence will automatically change to “In a Meeting” whenever you have a meeting appointment booked in your Exchange calendar. It will also automatically reflect your Out of Office information. You can manually change your status in Communicator if necessary.
1. Click on the arrow next to the main presence indicator
2. Select your desired status
Locating contacts

1. Enter the email address of the person in the search box
2. Drag the contact from the search results into the contact list
Building Groups

You can organize your contacts into groups. This will allow you to quickly send a message to the entire group simply by selecting the group contact.
1. Right click on the Contacts title or other group title
2. Select Create New Group
3. Enter a name for the group and press enter
4. Drag existing contacts into the group
Sending a message
1. Double click on the individual or group in your contact list
2. Type your message and hit enter
Starting a screen sharing session
1. Either begin a chat session with the contact or right click on the contact name
2. Click Share and select which monitor/applications etc. you wish to share with the individual
Inviting additional attendees to a chat
1. Click on the Invite icon within the chat window
2. Select Invite a Contact
3. Select the appropriate contact
Setting your location
1. Click on the arrow next to the main presence indicator
2. Select “Current Location”
3. Choose Home or Office (or a custom location)
Other Options
There are a number of customizations that you can make to your communicator client including saving conversations in Outlook.
1. Click the arrow in the top left corner of the communicator window
2. Select Tools
3. Select Options
