University Curriculum in ACCESS.SMU - In January, two training sessions were held to demonstrate and instruct staff and faculty on the University Curriculum and how it will be handled in ACCESS.SMU.  Ninety-one people participated in this one hour presentation.  Those attending were impressed with the system and feel that it will allow the University Curriculum to be tracked as easily as courses.

ImageNOW - is a repository of almost 11 million documents.  In a recent report on imaging activity in January, the report showed 3,734,722 documents were stored that amounted to 10,864,445 pages.  The number of users was 4,167 from 183 different campus groups.

Transfer Stampede - an Admission program for admitted as well as prospective transfer students brought over 100 students and their families to SMU for a Saturday program.  Two morning sessions split the group. Admitted students participated in "SMU: What is Next for Admitted Students" and prospective students participated in "Transferring to SMU 101".  Students chose to attend one of the presentations by the undergraduate schools, heard from a panel of current students who transferred to SMU, had presentations on Academic Success and Scholarships and Financial Aid.  At the end of the program, students all admission materials submitted could participate in Mustang Express Decision during which their application is evaluated by an Admission staff member.  Student may receive a conditional admission to SMU, pending the results of their current semester's course work.

Evacuate, Shelter in Place, Lockdown

All of us grew up participating in "Fire Drills" and in Texas "Tornado Drills."  Residences of facilities on the campus participate in "Evacuation Drills" and "Shelter in Place Drills" once a year but not in lockdown drills.  Enrollment Services invited Lisa Morris, Emergency Manager on the staff of Risk Management and Environmental Health & Safety to the February Division meeting to talk about the protocol for a lockdown.  Lisa showed the video, "Shots Fired."  The video provides valuable information for situations in which a facility must lockdown so that occupants may protect themselves from an intruder.

In the coming months, Enrollment Services will conduct a "walk-through" to provide staff the opportunity to locate safe places to hide and to work with other staff in their area to ensure that the location is a secure as possible.

VIPs - Very Important Ponies

Some of our VIPs this month are:

Pam Fincher - Yea!  This will help out so much.  Pam . . . You are the best.  Thanks. [Pam worked on an enhancement to the updating of the Meningitis information field in the Health History record to automatically and instantly release tan enrollment hold.  This will eliminate half the required updating.  Also a specific HOLD for the Meningitis requirement will be created.]  Happy staff in the Memorial Health Center

Enrollment Services - I wish to thank Enrollment Services very much for your help.  In appreciation, I am making another Parent Leadership Gift to SMU.  My hat is off to you and to SMU. [assistance with a medical withdrawal for a student]  Happy Mother

Bursar's Refund Team - you are amazing.  Your commitment to get refunds to our students as quickly and accurately as possible is appreciated.  Even though regulations allow 14 days to process a refund, you often do it much faster.  Thank you.   Pat Woods

Jackie Wilborn - I want to compliment Jackie on the good service she provided to a former student.  He needed certification letters.  He expressed his appreciation on how nice she was.  Well done Jackie!  Happy co-worker

Monica Cordero, Pam Fincher, Darrah Rippy and OIT - have enhanced the Degree Progress Report (DPR) to include Honors designation for a student's course enrollment such that it prints on the DPR.  Thanks for the good work.

New Version of Schedule.SMU

In January, the registrar’s office rolled out an updated version of Schedule.SMU.   We are pleased to announce that this new version (7.4) has several new features which help to improve the overall user experience in the system.  These features include:

·         Improved search filters: Rooms, events and other items can be found more quickly and with faster and more precise results, thanks to enhanced search parameters.

·         New sort capabilities: Search results may now be sorted by column (ascending/descending).  In addition, users now have the capability to add and remove columns in order to customize their search results.

·         Updates to the event notification system: Users now have the ability to set preferences on how often they would like to receive notification emails (event requests, etc.) from the Schedule.SMU system.

·         New Reports: Several new reports were delivered as part of the upgrade.   We also continue to add custom reports to the system on a regular basis.   Please contact DES schedule (DESschedule@mail.smu.edu)  if you would like to discuss customizing a report to better fit your needs.

·         Improved calendar view: All calendars now automatically appear in the Grid View. This improvement allows users to view events and class sections in a clean layout that is easy to navigate.

We received positive feedback (especially on the new calendar view!) whenever we demonstrated these new changes to our schedulers.  We appreciate all the user input gathered which allows us to continue making improvements to Schedule.SMU.

Do you have questions regarding any of these changes, or do you want to learn how to navigate Schedule.SMU like a pro?  Visit the Schedule.SMU landing page at schedule.smu.edu in order to view help documents and to learn more about the system.

Kick Off Opportunities to Succeed

Over 1.5 millions will graduate this year with a Bachelor's degree.  Summer School, in conjunction with other SMU programs, are encouraging students to "Pack Your Bachelor's Degree Full!" with an extra major, minor, or degree through a summer program or J term.  OR by adding a global experience with SMU Abroad or exploring the southwestern culture at SMU-in-Taos.

Adding a liberal arts major to a BBA, BFA, Engineering degree, or combined with teaching certification may be what makes an SMU student stand out to an employer or graduate/professional school.  Much is written underscoring the importance of a strong liberal arts foundation in order to compete in a world that is constantly changing.  Employers want new staff who can think - critically and imaginatively.

The new Engaged Learning program is one of the best ways to add value to your bachelor's degree.  Students show their ability to create, implement, and document an idea from start to finish.  Within the program are opportunities to work with people in the community that may open doors in the future.

Summer School, SMU-in-Taos, SMU Abroad, Engaged Learning and J term will be at the flagpole distributing information (and other free stuff) on February 20th 11-2.  Encourage your students to learn how to:
