Student Center in version 9.0

Enrollment Services is gearing up for the June 2011 release of PeopleSoft 9.0, and a new and improved Access. SMU Student Center!  The V9.0 Student Center offers exciting new features as well as an improved look and feel of existing features found in 8.9.  As in 8.9, the 9.0 Student Center is divided into four main categories:

·         Academics
·         Finances
·         Personal Information
·         Quick Links

Academics - Student Records and Academic Advisement

My Planner - New to 9.0, the My Planner feature available to students under the Academic section allows students to add courses to their Planner via Browse Course Catalog or Plan By My Requirements and stage them until they are ready to enroll.  Planned courses remain in My Planner until a student deletes them.  A student’s advisor will have the ability to view an advisee’s My Planner courses.

Degree Progress Report – New to 9.0 the Interactive DPR affords students the opportunity to view results online as well as generate a .pdf report in real time.  The interactive version provides links to course details; enables students to search for and enroll in classes based on academic requirements, and courses within a requirement can be sorted.  In 9.0, the DPR will no longer be sent to the student’s campus email address, but can be accessed in a .pdf printable format.  Students across careers will use the view his/her DPR in the same format.  Currently in 8.9, only active students can run a DPR, but in 9.0, all students will have the ability to view their DPRs regardless of academic status.

Yet another great feature is the Undergraduate Summary Report, which will provide a one-page, at-a-glance, status of a student’s progress toward satisfying degree requirements.  This report is a new SMU customization to replace the first page of the 8.9 DPR and will be available in a .pdf printable format.

Finances – Financial Aid and University Bursar

The Financial Aid page will continue to support View Financial Aid, Accept/Decline Awards, and the custom FA Pony Tracks which tracks the student’s financial aid process from start to finish including missing items on the student To Do List providing a seamless transition for our students from the 8.9 version to the 9.0 version.

The Bursars page will continue to support five links, SMUPAY, Account Summary, My SF eSpace, Purchase Campus Essentials, and Transactions Details providing a seamless transition for our students from the 8.9 version to the 9.0 version.

Personal Information – Biographical, demographic and address/phone data as well as Student Organizations, Directory Restrictions, and Medical Health History.

V9.0 provides a simple step through to each of the major components comprising the annual Personal Information review making it easier for students to jump from Demographic Data, to updating their home phone and back again without missing a step in between.

Quick Links - Search for Classes, Holds, To Do List, Advisor contact detail

The Quick links section is where students go to Search for Classes, view and act on Holds, and To Do List items.  Review Advisor contact detail, purchase Health Insurance, take the Honesty Tutorial, and complete Orientation Registration.

VIPs - Very Important Ponies

Some of our VIPs this month are:

Bursar's Technology Team testing for the conversion of PeopleSoft 9.0 began.  The Student Account area was asked to assist with testing to make sure everything works properly.  I want to thank the entire Tech Team for their assistance and professionalism in making this process easy.  Special thanks go to Patricia May for her patience and willingness to help in explaining and training staff during testing.  I would like to thank the Bursar's Tech Team and all those on the Bursar's Student Account and Student Financial Operations staff who helped in the first two weeks of the first round of Oracle 9.0 testing.  Although we have not completed testing all 472 items, the great effort of these three teams completed 75% of the items.  I also thank those who did not do testing by filling in for those who did.

Jeremy Parrish  I wanted to take the time to write you a note about Jeremy and his efforts.  Jeremy has been patient, helpful, and extremely persistent in trying to get us to connect in order to bring this matter to a close.  I was particularly impressed when I received a message via Facebook from Jeremy asking me to get back to him.  Unfortunately, I have been away on travel so it has been tougher than I anticipated to get to him.  The matter is closed on my end as I have brought my account current, but I just wanted to let you know and acknowledge Jeremy's efforts over the past few weeks.  A Former SMU Student  Jeremy collected $26,000 in past due balances on 3 student accounts last Friday.  Awesome job!!

Meredith Dawson, you are my hero!  I so appreciate the time you've taken to sort this out then explain it clearly.  I mailed a check yesterday for the full amount invoiced which pays through the February 11th work period.  We're thankful to have the opportunity to use the SMU work study students and have some excellent young employees - again!

Paola Sotomayor  Words are not enough to express my sincere gratitude towards you.  I am very happy and grateful to you for all your help.

Kelly Milazzo  It is 5:08pm and we are all heading home.  Because you took the time to check the voice messages from home last night, it really helped the three of us stay on top of the phones and messages today.  Thanks for emailing the messages to me this morning, hope yours and your daughter's doctor's visits went well.

New Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management

At the April Enrollment Services meeting Drs. Paul Ludden and Harold Stanley announced the appointment of Stephanie Dupaul as the Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management.  Dr. Dupaul will be the first to hold this position and report to the Provost with responsibility for Undergraduate Admission, the Bursar's Office, Financial Aid, and the Registrar's Office.  The Division of Enrollment Services has been under the Associate Provost.  Dr. Ludden commented that this provides a focus on Enrollment Management comparable to other institutions.  Stephanie came to SMU twelve years ago to head undergraduate recruiting for the Cox School of Business.  This August she stepped in as the Interim Dean of Admission.  One of her first duties will be to begin the search for a new Dean.

Centennial Diplomas

Diplomas are awarded in May 2011, August 2011 and December 2011 will contain an additional statement that the degree is being awarded “in the centennial year of the University’s founding”.  The statement will be modified for diplomas awarded from 2012 through 2015 and state “during the celebration years of the University’s centennial”.  The Centennial Committee came up with this idea.    Thank you!!

   Update from Undergraduate Admission

Destination SMU is over, after three super programs. The third program was the largest admitted student event we’ve ever held! Kudos to Abbi and Lori for organizing these events, and thanks to EVERYONE for their support and participation.

·      Deposits are due May 2nd, and are currently tracking for a class of 1400. The next three weeks are KEY – this is when we normally receive 60% of deposits. We’ll have loads of visiting admitted students on campus, so keep that DES warm welcome at the ready. It takes an entire campus to bring in a class!

·     Travel season has begun, and so has recruiting for the entering class of 2012.

Staff Attend Conference on changes in Veterans Benefits

Angie Flores, Mitzie Goff, and Veronica Decena attended the Texas Association of Collegiate Veteran’s Program Officials Conference in Lewisville, TX, on March 2-4, 2011.  This conference serves to educate Texas schools about VA programs and how we can better serve the VA students.  The information provided in TACVPO this year was rather important since changes to VA funding will have a huge impact on not only SMU students, but SMU as a whole.  The new yearly cap for Post 911 Chapter 33 VA students will be $17,500.  All departments in DES are working together to make a recommendation enabling SMU to continue assisting the Post 911 VA students.
