Enrollment Services Celebrates bringing in the new class.

September 10th is the census date at which SMU reported the enrollment statistics for fall 2008.  SMU welcomed 1400 new students from high school and reported a total  enrollment of 6,264 undergraduate students and 4,699 graduate and professional students. For details of fall enrollment, click  http://smu.edu/intranet/des/current_term.asp.

At a breakfast on the morning of the 10th, the Executive Directors of Enrollment Services expressed a "World of Gratitude" to the staffs of UG Admission, Enrollment Resources, Financial Aid, the Registrar's Office, and Student Financial Services for their hard work this past year,  stating that by the strong collaboration of all the areas in Enrollment Services, the almost 11,000 students at SMU this fall are starting class.  The goal of Enrollment Services is to make this transition each term a smooth one for our students and their families.  The Executive Directors thanked each member of Enrollment Services for their contribution to the success of this goal.

VIPs - Very Important Ponies

Epi Ramirez

The September Very Important Pony remembers Epi Ramirez.  Epi passed away this July.  Epi had a long association with SMU and many, many friends across campus.

Epi began his association with SMU as an Upward Bound student, continued at SMU to receive a Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences and a Master's degree in Liberal Studies.  Epi was a lifelong learning.  This summer he talked of applying to the SMU Law School night JD program because he missed going to class.

Epi also worked in the Registrar's office for 18 years.  Actually, a few years more when adding his time as a student worker.  He worked his way through the Academic Records area to the position of Manager of the Transcript area.  Compliments for his assistance often appeared in this column.  Here is a sample:

Indeed, all IS well.  Thank you so very much for your help.  We sincerely appreciate your kind attention and your efforts to accomplish this delivery for us.  What a lovely "registrar" experience.

Got it!  Thanks very much.  I never got such great service from anyone at SMU until you.

Thanks so much for sending the transcript I requested via voicemail yesterday.  As always, I very much appreciate your quick response to my requests.

So many people have contacted staff in the Registrar's Office and Enrollment Services to express their condolences.  To provide a way for people to remember Epi, the Division of Enrollment Services has created a fund to collect donations for a memorial gift of furniture for the Blanton Terrace.  Gifts may be directed as follow:

Please make sure to list the designation Epi Ramirez Remembrance - 01479.

Include: Name, ID, amount, and designation 01479.

If people would like to pay online they can go to:  www.smu.edu/giving. We accept cash, checks, or credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and AMEX).

Or send Donations to Gift Administration, Box 402, PAB G03.

John Hall said it for all of us:

Epi's love of SMU and his strong desire for doing the very best for our students and their families was always evident.  Like you, it is hard for me to accept that he is no longer with us in the office, and I wonder how he could be taken from us while in the prime of his life.  I just expected Epi to be here when I retired in a few years.  After all, he'd worked with me for over 18 years.  I expected that as I walked out the door for the last time that Epi, with his ever present smile, would reassure me that all  would be well as he knew where everything was and that he would be sure that no other school's Registrar's Office would help their students more than SMU did.  I know we'll be hurting together for some time, but I am confident that the hurt we now feel will be replaced in time with the pleasant memories of the times we spent knowing and working with Epi.

Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing.  ~Mother Teresa

Question
How many Opening Convocations have there been at SMU?

Answer
Ninety-three

Students and Faculty gather for Opening Convocation

August 24th announced the beginning of the 93rd year of instruction for Southern Methodist University.  The day began with University Worship in Perkins Chapel followed by the Common Readings discussions for first year students which led to the Opening Convocation, President's Picnic, and the Dessert at the Hughes-Trigg Student Center.

First year students were introduced to Dr.  Cordelia Candelaria, Dean of Dedman College.  Dean Candelaria gave the keynote address at Opening Convocation  signaling the official opening of the academic year.  The Convocation is filled with tradition including Rotunda Passage in which new first year students pass through the Rotunda of Dallas Hall symbolizing their entry into the academic community of Southern Methodist University.

Following the Convocation, students were invited to the President's Picnic and Dessert at the Hughes-Trigg Student Center.  These two events have not been a part of the day before classes but proved to be a great success with over 2020 participants being served.  To view photographs from the Picnic click   http://smu.edu/newsinfo/slides/picnic2008/
