VIPs -
Very Important Ponies Some of our VIPs this month are: Stephen Forrest - I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your assistance with the data on President Scholars. With this being the 25th year of the program, I am researching its impact. Thank you for your time and for converting the data. Deanie Kepler Paley Wu - I just want to tell you again what a great employee you have in Paley. He is just so wonderfully patient with all my requests and it has been a really hectic year with the changes in the student loan industry. He continues to astonish me with his quick responsiveness and attention to detail. He is just a great help to those of us in F[inancial] A[id] who depend so much on the content of our website that has been a moving target this year. Thanks for hiring him. June Hagler Stanley Stubblefield - Just wanted to take a chance to tell you how much we appreciate Stanley. He's wonderful. I thought you need to hear that. Claudia Favela Joe Papari and the FERPA Team - Thanks to all who worked on this [the FERPA website and online Release of Education Records]. It is an important improvement. Tom Tunks Jerrod Harrell - My son Brian will be entering his sophomore year at SMU this fall. During his time at SMU, I have called many times with questions, and have always spoken to Jerrod Harrell. I am writing to inform you that he has always answered my questions with the utmost courtesy and patience. Mr. Harrell is an asset to the SMU community. A Happy Parent Adrienne Hawa and Jerrod Harrell - I am very pleased to announce the promotion of two members of the Enrollment Resources staff. Adrienne Hawa will now be the Assistant Director of Enrollment Resources. Adrienne has been very instrumental in the past success of the ER team and will continue to help us meet current team goals, as well as help direct the team toward the next level of customer service. Jerrod Harrell is moving into her previous position of Senior Enrollment Resources Specialist. Jerrod has been recognized by many within the division and many students and parents for his willingness to understand and resolve any and all of their concerns. Jerrod serves as project lead on some of our current initiatives. Please join me in congratulating them both on their new positions. Irma Herrera
FERPA, Me, of course, being you, a staff member of the Division of Enrollment Services. What was true before is still true today: a student’s education records are protected and may only be released to third parties (including parents) with the student’s written consent. All of this has been nicely repackaged and clearly explained by Joe Papari, Nada El-Sayed, and Paley Wu on the new and improved Registrar’s FERPA website at http://www.smu.edu/registrar/ferpa/
Of interest to you
will be FERPA Essentials for Staff at
http://www.smu.edu/registrar/ferpa/ Also, a method of refreshing and testing your knowledge is the FERPA tutorial & Quiz at http://www.smu.edu/registrar/ferpa/tutorial.asp
The “Release of
Education Records” feature in Access.SMU allows students to specify the areas
they want to share with a parent or relation. Previously, it was all or nothing.
Now, a student may chose to grant access to Financial Aid data but restrict
access to Academic Records data. The question you are probably asking yourself
is, how can I tell the difference? Well, this too is available on the new and
improved Registrar’s FERPA website under the Release of Education Records link
for Faculty and Staff at
http://www.smu.edu/registrar/ferpa/
Thank you VP Casey Did you notice that the 2008-2009 holiday schedule included an extra holiday? At the request of the SMU Staff Association, Vice President Christine Casey proposed to the President's Executive Council (PEC) that January 2, 2009 be designated as a holiday. Even thought the 2008-2009 calendar had been approved almost a year ago, the PEC approved the change and added January 2 to the holiday calendar. Many thanks to Vice President Casey for championing this change to the holiday schedule. |

Question
Answer Summer School Continues to Grow An initiative to enhance summer enrollment began in 2007.
For the past two years a target has been set and achieved to increase summer
undergraduate enrollment by 10%. Head count and credit hours have grown in
both undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs. An exciting addition to summer 2008 is programming. The
Summer School Office in conjunction with the Dedman Center for Lifetime Sports,
the Hughes-Trigg Student Center (H-T), and the Office of Residence Life and
Student Housing (RLSH) provided a number of events for summer school students.
The Dedman Center sponsored Volleyball Tournaments for both summer terms, took a
group to a Rangers Baseball game, and is sponsoring three outdoor adventures for
the second summer term. The Hughes-Trigg Student Center in conjunction with RLSH,
surveyed student taste in movies and offered a free showing of the film "21" on
Friday, June 21st in the Commons of the H-T. Over 70 students enjoyed the
film and free refreshment provided by several area businesses. The H-T
also sponsored Dean Jose Bowen for a Brown Bag lunch in the Varsity. Dean
Bowen presented "What is Jazz." All attending want to take Dean Bowen's
class in the fall. The Summer School Office wishes to thank everyone -
Departments, faculty, staff, and the Schools for the support and efforts to
enhance summer school. It is through your work that this success has
been achieved.
Welcome New Students Enrollment Services is one of the many welcoming new students
to SMU at Advanced Advising, Orientation, and Registration (AARO). The
third annual AARO Kick Off rallied the campus community and ignited enthusiasm
for the new academic year. Over 500 participants were served ice cream and
enjoyed the entertainment provided by the AARO student leaders. Throughout AARO, Enrollment Services strives to pave the way
for a smooth transition for our new students. Computers and staff are
available to assist students to set up Other Payer for their student accounts
and to Release their Education Records to authorized individuals. Each
AARO session Enrollment Services does a presentation on the services we provide
throughout the students tenure and staff answers specific questions at the
Resource Expo. Staff assist students with the enrollment process after the
student receive advising. All staff are available in the Blanton Building to check and
double check that everything is in place for the fall term. Our goals is
to assure families that their student's first term will be rewarding and
enjoyable. |
