C.W. Smith’s
goal since beginning his first novel has been to document in a
dramatic fashion the
cultural
conflicts of the American Southwest as well as the universal,
existential dilemmas
that arise
from being human regardless of place and time. Though some of
his novels are set in historical periods of the 19th
and 20th centuries, other work uses contemporary
conflicts and situations. He is also interested in writing for
film and has adapted three of his works of fiction for
screen. He finds his students very stimulating.
