Professor Neel’s research explores the intersections of and boundaries of the history of rhetoric, rhetorical theory, the history of criticism, literary criticism, and canon formation.   He is also interested in the history of the University-level English Department in North American Universities as that “department” has defined itself by what it includes and excludes, privileges, notices, ignores, and sometimes degrades.  Because he has spent many years in administration (eight directing writing programs, eight chairing English departments, nine as dean and vice provost, and three at the Modern Language Association as Director of English Programs) Professor Neel is interested in English studies as economic and logistical discourses.
