The Creative Writing Program of SMU's Department of English annually sponsors a contest for writers of prose fiction, plays, and poetry. Open to all regularly enrolled undergraduate students at SMU, the prizes are as follows:

  • David R. Russell Poetry Prize. First Place: $200; Second Place: $100. Judged by a published poet with a national reputation, selected by SMU faculty.

  • SMU Fiction Award. First Place: $200; Second Place: $100. Judged by a published fiction writer with a national reputation, selected by SMU faculty.

  • Margaret Terry Crooks Award for Most Outstanding Creative Writing Student. Awards $200. Not open to submission; chosen by SMU faculty.

  • Lon Tinkle Scholarship Prize also awarded by faculty and not open to submission.

  • *showcase selections are by SMU creative wrioting faculty.

Cash awards vary according to funds available.
