Applying to the Ph.D. Program
(for M.A. Program)

Ph.D. Admissions Requirements

Students applying to the Ph.D. English Graduate Program should have an undergraduate major in English, or demonstrate intensive study in the liberal arts that includes a solid background in English language literatures. 

Most applicants to the Ph.D. program have a B.A. in English or a relevant subject: an M.A. is not required.  Proficiency in one relevant foreign language is strongly  recommended prior to matriculation.  Applicants who have already earned the M. A. in English or a related area may receive credit for up to 18 of the required 60 hours, as determined during advising.  These applicants are eligible for no more than five years of fellowship support toward the Ph.D. 

All applicants to the Ph.D. program should submit:

  • GRE Verbal and Analytical Writing scores.
  • A GPA of at least 3.5.
  • Three letters of recommendation.
  • A writing sample in which an argument on a literary topic is sustained for about 15 pages.
  • A statement of purpose describing preparation for graduate study and reasons for pursuing the Ph.D. degree.

In addition to the materials listed above, a completed application file shall include: (1) an application form; (2) official transcripts for all post-high school academic work; and (3) the $75 application fee (payable to SMU).  Writing samples and all other application materials should be sent directly to the Office of Research and Graduate Studies, Southern Methodist University, P.O. Box 750240, Dallas TX, 75275-0240.

Application Deadlines (Fall Admission Only)

M.A. Program:   February 1.

Ph.D. Program  January 15.
