| EAGLE Scholars is a collaborative college-readiness summer program
coordinated by SMU's Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and
Human Development in partnership with the Vickery Meadow Youth
Development Foundation. The tuition-free program is designed to
encourage, support, and realize the potential of first-generation
college students. The academic, leadership, and enrichment activities
geared to high-achieving students are taught by college interns. Each
summer, approximately 30 rising 7th graders are nominated from Sam Tasby
Middle School to join the program. Students previously selected to
attend the program remain as middle or high school Eagle Scholars until
they graduate and enter college. The students participate in fine arts and sports at the Meadows Museum and Dedman Sports Center on SMU's campus. In addition to the in-class activities and field trips throughout the city, the EAGLE Scholars receive the benefit of weekly, face-to-face sessions with community leaders focusing on the importance of completing high school and college, one of the cornerstones of the EAGLE Scholars Program. |
