Master's Degrees & Graduate Certifications

SMU's Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development offers several Master's degrees and graduate certifications in the area of teacher education.  Click the following links to learn more about the respective degrees.  It is worth noting, that the School also offers a doctoral degree.

MASTER'S DEGREES

Master of Education (M. Ed.) with Teacher Certification
... 
designed for the individual who would like to teach but whose bachelor’s degree does not include teaching credentials.  The M.Ed. with Certification program allows a student to pursue a graduate degree and teaching certification simultaneously.  The program can be an excellent choice for someone who is interested in making a career change to teaching or for someone who is ready to resume a career after being at home with children and would like that career to involve young people.

Master of Education (M.Ed.)
... 
designed for practicing teachers who want to broaden their academic preparation and classroom skills while possibly pursuing a specialization certification.

Master of Bilingual Education (MBE)
... 
offers an interdisciplinary curriculum that prepares specialists in the field of bilingual education and master teachers of students who do not speak English as their primary language.

Master of Bilingual Education (MBE) with a Gifted and Talented Focus
...  much like the traditional MBE described above but with a gifted and talented focus.

Master of Science in Counseling
...  prepares students for the school counseling profession, which involves the application of the developmental and social sciences in assisting children with psychological growth and social adjustment problems.

Master of Education in Reading and Writing
...  prepares teachers for leadership in the implementation of the multi-tiered model of reading instruction. 

GRADUATE CERTIFICATES

Bilingual Education Certification
...  prepares teachers for the supplemental certification exam in Bilingual Education in Texas, which is required for teachers who work with students who do not speak English as their native language.

ESL Certification
...  equips teachers with the tools and knowledge necessary to obtain the certification in English as a Second Language. These courses may also be applied toward SMU’s 36-credit-hour Master of Education (M.Ed.) with a specialization in ESL.

Gifted Education Certification
...  provides a conceptual foundation and practical approaches for teachers of the gifted and talented, both specialists and regular classroom teachers.

Master Reading Teacher (MRT) Certification
...  equips experienced teachers with the tools and knowledge to serve as reading resource specialists to both students and teachers in elementary schools.

Master Mathematics Teacher (MMT) Certification
...  courses have been redesigned to meet the new state standards for the Master Mathematics Teacher certificate and were aligned with the Competencies required for a Master Mathematics Teacher.

Master Technology Teacher (MTT) Certification
...  was developed in response to an increasing demand for teachers skilled in using technology to facilitate teaching, assessment, research, and professional development.

Master Science Teacher (MST) Certification
...  was developed in response to a demand for science educators who can teach investigative methodology and techniques and equip students with the skills necessary to make informed decisions about issues and problems of a scientific nature.

Learning Therapist Certification
...  teaches individuals how to remediate dyslexia and related written-language disorders through professional educational therapy.

Reading Specialist
...  teachers completing the M.Ed. in Reading and Writing are eligible to sit for the Texas Reading Specialist exam.
