English as a Second Language (ESL) Certification

SMU’s Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development offers the four courses that are required for English as a Second Language (ESL) Certification.  These courses may also be applied toward SMU’s 36-credit-hour Master of Education (M.Ed.) with a specialization in ESL. 

Courses

The four courses (twelve credit hours) required for ESL Certification are:

• EDU 6312 Applied Linguistics
• EDU 6315 Diverse Learners
• EDU 6320 Language Teaching Research, Theory, and Practice
• EDU 6390 Classroom Instruction and Assessment for Language Learners

Click here for a printable PDF version of the ESL application.  You may also call 214-768-2346 to have an application mailed or faxed to you.  Prospective participants must complete the application as non-degree students.  (Applicants who have been admitted to the M.Ed. or M.B.E. program or who have submitted a M.Ed. or M.B.E. application and are approved for admission are, of course, degree-seeking students.)   

Tuition

Southern Methodist University offers a reduced tuition rate for education students. Graduate students are encouraged to seek sponsorships from their school districts.
