Advanced Placement Summer Institute

Advanced Placement Program* Summer Institute

AP English Language, June 15-19, 2009

Course Description:

The AP English Language Workshop is for inexperienced and experienced AP teachers. It will focus on innovative methods, activities, and assessments to use in the AP English classroom. We will discuss strategies for the teaching of AP skills, including rhetorical analysis, close reading, writing and analyzing argument/persuasion, as well as ways to bring American classic and contemporary non-fiction and fiction into the AP Language curriculum. In addition, a simulated reading of the 2009 AP Language Test will enable us to look at the methods needed to better prepare our students for the synthesis question. I also want to designate time for each of you to share your best practices, as well as the challenges and concerns you face as AP teachers. Please bring ideas, topics, and materials you would like to discuss and share.

Lead Consultant:

Mary Stanton from Plano Senior High School developed the AP Language course at PSHS and has taught it, along with AP Literature for twenty years. In 2001, Mary was named the Plano Senior High Teacher of the Year and a finalist for the Plano School District Secondary Teacher of the Year. She has been a consultant for the College Board for ten years and serves as a table leader at the AP Language and Composition Reading.
