Jacci Gantz has used her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in English for experience in middle school, high school, and university academics. She is a National Board Certified teacher, a recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship to Japan to work with elementary, junior high, high school, and universities in that country, and a Master Teacher in Language Arts for Oklahoma. She assists English departments across the Southwest that are developing Vertical Teams within their school systems. She is an SAT scorer and also presents Reading and Writing Across the Curriculum at statewide Language Arts conferences.
This workshop will provide professional development resources and activities to equip high school teachers with the strategies and tools they need to engage their students in active, high level learning. Participants will explore techniques to help students develop the skills, habits of mind, and concepts they need to succeed. Participants will learn how to take their students beyond the requirements of state testing and learn additional skills required to ensure that they perform well in future high school courses.
Topics will include the following:
*Close reading and annotation
* Writing about literature
* Composition, including grading, rubrics, and writers’ conferences
* The role of the AP exam
* Grammar and/or syntax
* Building better, more confident thinkers
* Strategies for challenging students without leaving them behind
