Course Description
This Pre-AP English section, taught by an experienced Pre-AP teacher, delves
into the introduction of analytical skills to middle school students. This
workshop will explore several areas, such as novel units, writing skills,
assessment writing, poetry analysis, and literary elements, and how these areas
can generate thought-provoking, substantiated responses from students.
Participants will also hear presentations on case-specific literature in the
middle school. Age and grade appropriate activities and discussions to lead
students to this type of higher-level thinking will be offered and experienced.

Diana Bjornson, a graduate of the University of Houston - Victoria with a degree
in English and Language Arts with secondary certification, is a 10th
grade World Literature teacher for both on-level and Pre-AP students at Union
Intermediate High School in Tulsa, OK. She is a member of the district’s
vertical team and has been involved with implementing Pre-AP and AP programs at
two different schools at both the middle school and high school levels. This is
her thirteenth year as a summer institute lead consultant. Recently, Diana has
been a faculty consultant for the McDougal-Littell literature books and has been
a scorer for the writing portion of the SAT exam. Diana has been recognized as
the 1996-97 Teacher of the Year at Jenks Central Middle School and the 2000-01
Teacher of the Year at Metro Christian Academy and is a National Board Certified
Teacher.
