Melinda McGrath and Carolyn Buss, Instructional Developers and Reading Coaches with SMU's Institute for Reading Research, were among 42 top educators from across the nation selected to present strategies for raising student achievement during 6 summer workshops in 2005. The workshops were sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education for teachers, reading specialists, principals and other educators from districts throughout the United States.
Designed for K–12 teachers and principals, the sessions covered reading and other literacy skills, mathematics, science, history and the arts, as well as how to use data effectively. Specialists also addressed teaching strategies for students with special needs and students who are learning English.
More information about the 2005 Summer Workshops and the Teacher-to-Teacher Initiative can be found at: www.ed.gov/teacherinitiative. The 2006 workshops will be posted on this site soon.
