Department of Teaching and Learning Joins Pi Lambda Theta
In spring 2008, SMU’s Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education, department of Teaching and Learning, joined the Direct Honors program of Pi Lambda Theta (PLT). Founded in 1910, Pi Lambda Theta (PLT) is the most selective national honor society of educators. The organization provides a forum for exchanging and developing ideas, fostering individual leadership, and promoting professionalism. PLT extends membership to students and professionals who satisfy academic eligibility requirements. Selection for Pi Lambda Theta for SMU students is more rigorous than the national standard. Undergraduates must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.75 and have 18 hours of education courses completed; post-baccalaureate students and graduate students must have a 3.75 GPA and 18 hours of education course work completed.
Benefits include a subscription to Educational Horizons, a journal of educational research, and a monthly newsletter with information about national trends in education. As a member you can participate in the PLT Job Match program, attend National Staff Development Council workshops at a discounted rate, and become eligible for grants and awards from the organization. Members who seek a local chapter for affiliation can go to the PLT website, http://www.pilambda.org/ to locate professional chapters in the Dallas area.
