This 45-hour degree program is designed for working professions and can be completed in two years including two summer sessions. Students take courses in a prescribed sequence through two 7-week modules in the fall, two 7-week modules in the spring, and a 4-week module during the first summer of enrollment and a two-week module during the second summer of enrollment. During the fall and spring academic terms, classes meet for approximately 3 1/2 hours on Wednesday evenings and 3 1/2 hours on Saturdays (*during the first half of each semester, class will meet all day on Saturdays). Summer session classes meet 4 or 5 days per week, with the exception of Field Studies, which meets on an as-needed basis.
The second year is a campus based residency (12 credit hours) where candidates will be paired with a mentor principal and clinical faculty member. Candidates will gain experience and apply their skills in a urban setting, while receiving support, coaching and feedback that will prepare candidates for principalship.
SMU offers a reduced tuition rate for this program, currently $460 per semester hour for the 2010-2011 Academic Year. The rate will increase to $487 for the 2011-2012 Academic Year. Significant scholarships will be available for candidates committed to leadership in urban schools and who meet the program criteria. These scholarships will be awarded at the end of Summer I. Information on the Office of Financial Aid at SMU is available at http://smu.edu/Financial_Aid/. FAFSA deadline is February 1, 2011 for Summer I enrollment.
Faculty is drawn from professors in the Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development and the Cox School of Business. Visiting professors and guest lecturers will also contribute to the offerings of the program.
