A week in Ireland June 27 - July 3, 2010

The SMU Center for Dispute Resolution and Conflict Management is pleased to announce the newest addition to our Study Abroad Program. The course, International Organizational Consulting will be presented in the 16th century halls of Trinity College, Dublin.  This class will focus on the processes and approaches that have been successfully utilized by numerous organizations to build and sustain functional international relationships.  Dr. Robert Barner, Associate Director for Executive Education will lead this distinctive class. This course incorporates a unique design format and includes one weekend, June 12-13, 2010, at the SMU Plano campus followed by the week of activities in Dublin.  This format will allow students ample time to explore Dublin and integrate a fuller cross-cultural experience with classroom learning.  The course also makes use of a variety of guest speakers to provide students with multiple perspectives on the field of international collaboration and consulting.

The program will be taught by  Dr. Robert Barner 

Dr. Robert Barner is the Associate Director of Executive Education for the Graduate Program in Dispute Resolution, within the Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development at Southern Methodist University. He teaches graduate classes in executive coaching, team building, group facilitation, and organizational consulting.

Prior to joining SMU, he held senior-level corporate HR positions for several different companies, several involving support to global operations. 

Dr. Barner is the author of five books on the subjects of career development, leadership development and team building, with three foreign language translations. He has also been a contributor to several texts and his articles on the subjects of career planning, executive coaching, executive development, and team building have appeared in multiple publications.  He holds a Masters and Doctorate in Organization Development, a Masters in Counseling Psychology, and a Baccalaureate in Education and Psychology.

 

Venue and Accommodations

Classes and accommodations will be at Trinity College Campus, which was founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth I.  It is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the world. Standing on a self contained site, the College itself covers 35 acres of cobbled squares and green spaces surrounded by buildings that represent the accumulated architectural riches of nearly three centuries.  Trinity College is in the very heart of Ireland's capital and within walking distance of shopping, historic sites, restaurants, bars, theatres, cinemas, museums and libraries.

Students will be provided  accommodation for 7 nights during the program.  Rooms are on-campus student housing with private baths.  For those who would like to bring family or guests, multi-bedroom apartments are also available for an additional cost.

Meals

 The program includes daily continental breakfast, five lunches, one special farewell dinner. Full breakfast or additional breakfast items can be purchased daily at additional cost.

Tours

Walking tours of Trinity College campus and local historical sites are planned along with a tour of the Book of Kells.   

Escorts

Dr. Barner will accompany all class tours.

Internet Service

Free internet service available 24 hours a day at the campus computer lab and Wifi can be purchased from the accommodation office at a cost of € 15 .00 for seven days.  Dublin, like all major European cities, has numerous internet cafes.

Not Included

Passports, trip insurance (recommended), personal tipping, airfare, airport taxes where applicable, airport transfers, lunches and those dinners not specified in the itinerary, laundry and room service, phone calls and textbooks.

Cost

The cost is $1895 per person, and covers accommodations, breakfasts, lunch and farewell dinner and planned tours. Please call the Dispute Resolution office for more information. SMU tuition and airfare is separate. Non-Credit tuition is $1304, for-credit students pay the standard $2220 per class rate. Students are responsible for obtaining their own airfare and making travel arrangements to and from Trinity College.

Reservations

The reservation deadline is January 15, 2010.  The class is limited to 20 students, a non-refundable deposit of $500.00 is required upon making your reservation.  The balance will be due March 15, 2010.  Tuition is due according to regular registration policies and deadlines.
