SMU's CENTER FOR DISPUTE RESOLUTION CREATES GLOBAL TRAINING
WITH MEDIATORS BEYOND BORDERS
DALLAS (SMU) At a time when change and conflict can develop quickly around the
world, SMU's Center for Dispute Resolution and Conflict Management is
establishing an innovative academic affiliation with Mediators Beyond Borders to
provide international conflict management training on the SMU-in- Plano campus.
The new program will enable dispute resolution students and volunteer mediators
to train with professionals for assignments initiated by Mediators Beyond
Borders.
"This affiliation with MBB is an important step in the development of SMU's
dispute resolution program," says Gary Robinson, director of the Center for
Dispute Resolution. "It will provide an excellent opportunity for students to
gain firsthand experience working on actual global conflicts with professional
mediators and conflict resolution experts."
Mediators Beyond Borders is a humanitarian nonprofit organization established to
work worldwide with communities interested in developing conflict resolution
skills and becoming effective at preventing, managing, resolving and healing
from conflict. Currently, MBB has projects in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Ecuador,
Colombia and the Middle East.
"The new program speaks to today's pressing issues," says Ken Cloke, former
president of Mediators Beyond Borders. This new alliance will enable MBB and
SMU to join in bringing the highest standards of conflict resolution training to
people around the world, when wars and natural disasters make these skills ever
more essential."
The Center for Dispute Resolution and Conflict Management is part of the Simmons
School of Education and Human Development and offers a master's degree in
dispute resolution as well as graduate certificates in dispute resolution and Executive Coaching. The center also provides low cost
mediation services to the public.
