Center for Dispute Resolution & Conflict Management

SMU Plano Mediation and Conflict Resolution Services

We offer low cost conflict resolution services to individuals and organizations that are involved in a dispute and wish to resolve it.  See below for a brief description of two commonly used approaches.  In addition to the services offered through the Center, we provide a listing of Conflict Resolution professionals that have graduated from our program and are available in private practice. Mediation

Mediation is a process in which an impartial third party assists disputants in finding a mutually acceptable solution to their dispute.  This option allows parties the most control over the outcome of their situation because any decision reached is by agreement.  Program faculty, alumni, area professionals and current students who have completed at least 200 training hours or are well established practitioners serve as volunteer mediators in a variety of case types including divorce, modification, business disputes, debt, real estate issues personal injury, and more.  After mediation is chosen and scheduled, a mediator will be assigned to the case by the Mediation Coordinator. Learn More

Arbitration

Arbitration is an alternative to litigation that allows parties to have more control over their case, but still leaves the ultimate decision to a neutral third party.  The process is similar to a trial but with less procedural restrictions.  Arbitrations provided at the Center will be conducted on a volunteer basis by faculty, alumni, current students who have completed at least 200 hours of training or by well established area practitioners.  Arbitrator assignments will be made after the case is scheduled.
