Prerequisites

The SMU Writer’s Seminar in New York serves as a culmination of the SMU CAPE Creative Writing Program, and as such, carries several prerequisites. Students with a complete manuscript and successful completion of one of these paths may apply*:

 

  1.  Novel Track

    • Creative Writing Introduction

    • The Novel: Story

    • The Novel: Plot

    • All Tracks: Chapters

    • All Tracks: Revision (complete mss approval required before class)

    • All Tracks: Polish

 

  1. Narrative Nonfiction Track

    • Creative Writing Introduction

    • Nonfiction Proposal

 

  1. Manuscript Evaluation Track

    • Manuscript Evaluation

    • All Tracks: Polish

 

  1. Private Tutorial Track

    • Private Tutorial in Fiction or Nonfiction

  1. Past participation in the SMU Writer's Seminar in New York

  1. Novel Track

    • Chapters and Revision (advanced accountability courses) highly recommended

 

  1. Narrative Nonfiction Track

    • Creative Writing Introduction

    • Narrative Nonfiction I: Ideas & Elements

    • Narrative Nonfiction II: Organize & Implement

    • Novel/Narrative Nonfiction III: Polish

    • Chapters and Revision (advanced accountability courses) highly recommended

 

NOTE:

Intensive courses offered in the Maymester format or at SMU-in-Taos fulfill these prerequisites:

  •  Maymester, 2010: All Tracks: Revision (manuscripts are due for approval by April 30, 2010).

  •  July 14-18, 2010, SMU-in-Taos: Creative Writing Introduction, Novel: Story; All Tracks: Chapters.
