Prerequisites

The SMU Writer’s Seminar in New York serves as a culmination of the SMU Continuing Education Creative Writing Program, and as such, carries several prerequisites. Students with a complete manuscript and successful completion of one of these five paths may apply*:

  1. Novel Track
    • Creative Writing Introduction
    • Novel One: Elements
    • Novel Two: Synthesis
    • Novel/Narrative Nonfiction Three: Polish
    • Novel 2.5 and Novel 2.75 (advanced accountability courses) highly recommended

     

  2. Manuscript Evaluation Track
    • Manuscript Evaluation
    • Novel/Narrative Nonfiction Three: Polish

     

  3. Private Tutorial Track
    • Private Tutorial in Fiction or Nonfiction

     

  4. Narrative Nonfiction Track
    • Creative Writing Introduction
    • Narrative Nonfiction One: Short and Long Works
    • Narrative Nonfiction Two: Short and Long Works
    • Novel/Narrative Nonfiction Three: Polish OR Chapter Revision Tutorial

     

  5. Past participation in the SMU Writer's Seminar in New York

*Please note: these paths apply to the 2009 SMU Writer's Seminar in New York. In September of 2009, the SMU Continuing Education Creative Writing Program will announce its new curriculum, which will be used to guide students to New York for future seminars, beginning with 2010 and beyond.
