In fact, for several years now, Jobs Rated Almanac has named financial planning as one of the top-rated jobs in America. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts faster-than-average growth for financial planners through 2010, as a better-educated, wealthier and longer-living population requires more investment advice and financial guidance.

Course Schedule

  • January 19–September 14, 2010
  • Tuesdays 6–9 p.m. and every other Saturday 8 a.m.–3 p.m.
  • Begin the program in January and be finished with the CFP Board educational requirement in time to sit for the November 2010 CFP® Certification Examination.

Program features

  • Nine-month accelerated program (January through September) makes it possible for students to complete their studies in less than one year.

  • The program concludes with a case studies course emphasizing practical application. Students complete the SMU program having seen, analyzed and put together a financial plan.
  • Curriculum fulfills the educational requirements for application to sit for the CFP® Certification Examination.

Prerequisite

Students must have a four-year degree before enrolling in the program. The Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. (CFP Board) requires individuals to have an undergraduate degree prior to obtaining CFP® certification. No particular major or emphasis is required.

Costs

  • Program fee: $4,295 plus cost of textbooks.
  • Early registration fee: $3,995 if received by January 5, 2010.
  • TSCPA member fee: $3,895 plus cost of textbooks.
  • One-time, non-refundable application fee: $50
  • For a $100 surcharge, students can divide the tuition into two payments using a promissory note. If you are interested in this payment option, call 214-768-2273.

Continuing Education

  • SMU is registered with the Texas State Board of Public Accountants as a CPE sponsor; sponsor ID# is 541. TSCPA CPE Foundation, Inc., is a co-sponsor. Each module in the SMU CFP in Plano program hosts 3.6 CEUs (seven modules in total).

  • For Insurance Agents: SMU is a registered provide of CE units for the Texas Department of Insurance.
