Program features
Nine-month accelerated program (January through September) makes
it possible for students to complete their studies in
less than one year.
Instructors are experienced practitioners in the financial planning
field.
Convenient weeknight/weekend schedule makes it easy for professionals
to participate.
Courses are taught in succession, not simultaneously, providing
optimal subject focus and concentration.
Students learn strategies for review and retention.
The program concludes with a case studies course emphasizing
practical application. Students complete the SMU
program having seen, analyzed and put together a financial
plan.
Students must have a four-year degree before enrolling in the
program. The Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards,
Inc. (CFP Board) requires individuals to have an undergraduate
degree prior to obtaining CFP® certification. No particular major or
emphasis is required.
For a $100 surcharge,
students can divide the tuition into two payments using

Continuing Education
SMU is registered with the Texas State Board of Public
Accountants as a CPE sponsor; sponsor ID# is 541. TSCPA CPE
Foundation, Inc., is a co-sponsor. Each module in the SMU CFP in
Plano program hosts 3.6 CEUs (seven modules in total).
For Insurance Agents: SMU is a registered provide of CE
units for the Texas Department of Insurance.
Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. owns the marks CFP®, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, and CFP (with flame logo)®, which it awards to individuals who successfully complete initial and ongoing certification requirements.
SMU does not certify individuals to use the CFP®, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® and . CFP certification is granted solely by Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. to individuals who, in addition to completing an educational requirement such as this CFP Board-Registered Program, have met ethics, experience and examination requirements.
