There are seven courses in the SMU Program; students register for each course separately. Main campus courses meet for three hours once a week in the evenings and are approximately one quarter, or eleven weeks, in length.  Students should be able to complete the entire Program in approximately 24 months on the Traditional Path by taking one class each week, per quarter, or possibly in as little as 12 months by taking 2 classes each week, per quarter on the Pacesetter Path.

SMU CPFP in Plano courses meet on Tuesday evenings and every other Saturday; courses are approximately 6 weeks. The Plano program begins annually in January and ends in mid-September in time for students to sit for the CFP® Certification Examination in November. Click here for more information about the Plano cohort.

* Pacesetter Path Registration Fee not available for online registration.  Please call 214-768-2737 to enroll.

TEXTBOOKS

Course textbooks are not included in the price of the course. Students may obtain books on their own, directly through the publisher. For more information about specific textbook requirements and costs, click here.

GENERAL POLICIES

Students must enroll before attending a course; Instructors will not accept enrollment fees. SMU reserves the right to substitute Instructors, change course locations, cancel courses, adjust curricula or schedules, or limit enrollment.

Students are required to enroll in the Fundamental of Financial Planning course in their first quarter of the Program. For part-time students, this course must be their first; for full-time students, this course may be taken with one other, but must be taken in the first quarter of the Program. Students are required to attend an Orientation Session within their first quarter of the Program.

CANCELLATION AND REFUND POLICY

Notification of any intent to withdraw from the course must be submitted to the Associate Director in writing via e-mail, fax, or mail. Failure to withdraw will result in forfeiture of course fee. Students may withdraw from a course 3 business days before the first scheduled class session. A $25 cancellation fee will be withheld from tuition; the balance will be refunded. Should SMU cancel a course, full tuition will be refunded. No refunds are permitted after a course begins; for the Plano cohort, no refunds are permitted after the first module begins. Students may transfer to an upcoming course in lieu of withdrawing up to the week following the mid-term exam; a transfer fee of $150 will be assessed to cover administrative costs. This amount supersedes the $25 cancellation fee. Students may transfer enrollment only three times during their time in the Program.

MILITARY LEAVE

Exceptions are made for students who are called to active or reserve duty during their time in the SMU Program.  For more information, call 214-SMU-CPFP.
