eCenter Staff Biography

Thomas W. Downing

Tom Downing is Online Learning Systems Administrator/Developer for the Mitch and Linda Hart eCenter at SMU. He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1968 with and A.B. in Political Science and a minor in Math and Physics. Returning to Dallas he received a Masters Degree from SMU's Perkins School of Theology 1974. Tom spent ten years as a United Methodist minister serving churches in the North Texas Annual Conference including Lucas, Denton, Little Elm and Henrietta.

He became a computer consultant for Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas in 1983. As one of SMU's first microcomputer consultants Tom installed the first microcomputer lab in the Bradfield Computing Center. Later as network manager he helped install the first fiber optic based network on campus. Most recently as head of Academic Computing Services Tom was responsible for technical support of academic computing including student labs, instructional technology, research computing, and software training.

Tom joined the staff of the Hart eCenter May 1, 2001. He is in charge of developing and administering online learning systems and courseware.
