Internet Privacy and Security

Questions surrounding the need for privacy and security on the Internet have been the center of controversy for some time. The tension between the need of service providers for information and the desire for individuals to control their personal information seems only to increase over time. The need for guaranteed security of information continues to be of great concern to both corporations and individuals. Now, following the events of September 11, 2001, these questions have become more vital than ever.

In addition to the view of Internet security technology as protection, the most advanced thinkers and users in the area advance the idea that appropriate security technology is, in fact, a strong enabler of applications which might otherwise be untenable. The Hart eCenter supports that view and is actively researching the conceptual framework in which the benefits of security as an enabling technology can be evaluated.

The Hart eCenter has set itself the mission of providing a forum for the exploration of these issues in the hope that we can help those who are concerned with the formulation of future policy and law see all the ramifications of their decisions. In keeping with the interdisciplinary nature of the eCenter we will be bringing together people of diverse disciplines and backgrounds such as business, law, technology, sociology and ethics in an ongoing conversation.
