The
Petrology Lab is the Department of Earth Science's focal point for
understanding problems concerning the chemical evolution of minerals and
rocks. Microscopy is an important tool in understanding the reactions involved.
Leitz Ortholux and Dialux petrographic microscopes are available. An Olympus
BHS and Zeiss research polarizing microscope equipped with 35mm or Polaroid
cameras can be used to obtain images of thin sections. The petrology lab
also houses a computer controlled MicroMill System for precise sampling
of thick sections by a drill mounted on a video microscope assembly. This
sampling allows traverses for oxygen isotope and XRF analysis to be made
across a mineral.
