teacher certification

As soon as possible in your college career, tell your Dedman adviser of your desire to become a teacher and decide which age and/or subject you want to teach: early childhood-grade 4, grades 4-8, or grades 8-12. If the choice is middle school or high school grades, you will need to decide what subject you want to teach. You can then decide on an approved major within Dedman College or Meadows School of the Arts, while taking courses in the General Education Curriculum: written English, mathematical sciences, history, and science and technology. You’ll interview with center faculty members for formal admission to the center. Once accepted into the Teacher Education Program – usually in the junior year – your adviser will guide your program of study, which includes field and student teaching experience, and preparation for the TExES tests.

Requirements for Admission to Teacher Certification Program

Sixty hours of academic work while pursuing an approved major in Dedman College or Meadows School of the Arts, including certain specified courses in the General Education Curriculum

Faculty

Your mentors are master teachers and scholars who have distinguished themselves in their respective educational areas. Additional teachers who are not on staff provide guidance.

Internships & Study Abroad

A major component of your field experience is one semester of student teaching, or a two-semester internship. This in-the-classroom experience will better enable you to meet the dynamic learning needs of today’s youth.

With careful planning, you can take advantage of SMU’s Study Abroad Program to expand your experience and global insights.
