statistical science

Your courses focus on using modern, powerful data analysis methods to make decisions using data collected from statistically designed studies and experiments. Choose from two statistical science tracks. Track 1 is for students who are not planning advanced studies in statistical science but want to use their data analysis skills in such areas as government, business, or industry. Track 2 is ideal if you’re planning to pursue graduate work in statistics or a related field. It concentrates more on the mathematical and theoretical basis for modern statistical methods.

Statistical science can be applied to so many academic disciplines that it makes a logical double major or minor. Try combining it with a major in engineering, business, computer science, or the natural sciences.
Careers
Graduates who are skilled in statistical analysis are in great demand and readily secure careers as professional statisticians in a wide variety of fields including academics, actuary/insurance, aerospace, biostatistics, chemical engineering, computer technology, database management, economics, government, marketing, medicine, and wildlife management. Many local, national, and international firms have large statistical units within their organizations.

Chances are you’ll work on special projects with faculty members. Most instructors have national reputations for teaching and research excellence within the statistical science community. All are extremely innovative in the classroom and interested in your personal progress.

Get a global vantage point of the role statistics play in our society by participating in the SMU Study Abroad Program. Choose from yearlong, semester, or summer programs at locations around the world. Statistical science majors will especially benefit from the SMU-in-Copenhagen and SMU-in-Japan programs.
