Dedman College Majors

public policy

Developed by the departments of political science and economics, the public policy major integrates coursework in these disciplines, providing students with analytical skills, training, and substantive knowledge necessary for careers in government, business, consulting, and nonprofit organizations. Students learn to analyze complex policy questions from their studies in economics, and they deepen their comprehension of the historical background and social context related to these policy questions from their courses in political science. Majors also concentrate in at least two of three specialties in public policy: international politics and policy, political economy, and law and social policy.

Degree Highlights

B.A. in Public Policy
Minimum 33 term hours in public policy coursework

Related Majors and Minors

Public policy majors may also consider pursuing other disciplines as a double major or minor. Related choices include economics, political science, business, journalism, and history.

Careers

Public policy majors are increasingly sought after for positions at government agencies, corporations, and nonprofit organizations. They often pursue advanced degrees in law, business, economics, and criminal justice.

Faculty

Professors in the program are members of the departments of political science and economics. They are dedicated to preparing the next generation of policy makers, with plenty of practical ideas and situations for students to explore.

Internships & Study Abroad

Dedman College students get paid internships through the Hegi Family Career Development Center. Students majoring in public policy may be eligible to earn up to three (3) graded credits toward their degrees by enrolling for unpaid, faculty-directed internships through the Dedman College Internship Program. Students are encouraged to seek internships in political, social, public interest, government, business, and other organizations. Students also can take advantage of The John C. Tower Center for Political Studies, which brings distinguished diplomats and international political experts to campus. Vice President Dick Cheney is among past diplomats-in-residence. The center sponsors internships and research fellowships for undergraduates; many more summer and semester internships in Washington, D.C., and other government capitals are available.

Public policy majors can broaden their classroom experience through SMU Study Abroad Programs. Choose from yearlong, semester, or summer programs that probe timely political issues at locations around the globe. The most relevant programs are SMU-in-Australia, SMU-in-Copenhagen, SMU-in-Paris, SMU-in-Japan, SMU-in-Spain, SMU-in-Oxford, and SMU-in-Taipei.
