Courses explore both biological and cognitive processes and how they relate to such areas as experimental, abnormal, gender, clinical, and motivational psychology. You’ll learn how to think critically, express your views effectively, and better understand the complexities of human nature. There are plenty of opportunities for hands-on research with faculty, as well as internships that prepare you for postgraduate or professional work. As the world gets ever more diverse and you are challenged to interact with people at so many levels, a psychology degree becomes increasingly valuable.

Related Majors and Minors

Psychology makes a useful double major or minor because it interrelates with certain other disciplines. Try combining it with a major in business, English, history, philosophy, or one of the natural sciences, such as geology or chemistry.

Careers

A psychology degree can lead in many directions, ranging from graduate studies to a career in such fields as business, speechwriting, market research, finance, law, social work, and medicine.

Psychology’s relevance to medicine attracts many pre-med students as majors. About 40 percent of our majors pursue a Master’s degree.

Faculty

The quality of teaching in the department is excellent, with faculty members who are attentive and give you personal attention. Many have received research and teaching awards. Each year, both faculty and students publish numerous books and research articles; you will have a chance to be involved in research.

Internships & Study Abroad

Dedman College students get paid internships through the Hegi Family Career Development Center. Students majoring in psychology may be eligible to earn up to three (3) pass/fail credits toby enrolling in the Human Relations Practicum. Some students find practicum placements through the Dedman College Internship Program.

Experience a whole new perspective on the world and on human behavior by participating in the SMU Study Abroad Program. Choose from yearlong, semester, or summer programs at locations around the world. Psychology majors will especially benefit from the SMU-in-Copenhagen program, among others.

Dedman College Pride Point Image
Several math majors will spend 12 weeks at the National Institute of Standards and Technology's Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship in Gaithersburg, MD. The competitive program awards stipends each summer for about 100 U.S. students.
