Preprofessional Programs
premedical &
predental
studies
In addition, students will need to take courses necessary for the study of medicine, like biological sciences, chemistry, physics, and mathematics. Courses required by medical and dental schools vary; therefore, we encourage students to check specific school prerequisites.
Although not a major, the SMU premedical and predental studies program assists students with planning their undergraduate coursework, choosing a medical school, and navigating the application process. For more information, take a look at our Pre-health Professions website that includes our suggestions for preparing for premedical and predental studies.
Careers
SMU students are typically accepted to top medical and dental schools at a rate that is 20-30% above the national average.
Special SMU programs like SMU BRITE Scholars and the APT (Advancing Physical Therapy) Program provide a tremendous advantage to students considering careers in biomedical research.
Faculty
To prepare for a medical career, you will encounter many professors from a variety of Dedman College departments and disciplines. Each, in some way, will shape your education and lead you closer to your goals. In addition, you will work closely with the Dedman College Academic Advising Center. The premedical adviser, Karen de Olivares, can answer many of your questions and provide you with highlights of the program.
Internships & Study Abroad
Major hospitals, laboratories, and other health professionals in the Dallas area offer a chance to do volunteer or paid work, as well as internships. Students have interned at many other facilities across the country.
Study-abroad opportunities abound for SMU undergraduate students. Choose from year, semester, or summer programs at locations around the globe. Premed and predental majors might find the Medical Practice and Policies study program at SMU-in-Copenhagen particularly valuable and interesting.
